Michelle signed up Jessica and Phil before we joined our businesses so I had the fortunate opportunity to meet them and be one of their wedding photographers last weekend.
What a fun couple, and what a fun wedding!
I really enjoyed getting to know Phil. When doing weddings with Michelle, she spends time with the bride during the set-up while I spend time with the groom. So I got to hear Phil’s story and meet his group of friends.
Getting married could be called his third chapter in his life’s story. The first was being a Marine and spending time in Falluja, Iraq. The second was being a smoke jumper for the Forest Service. I was very impressed with how he made the third chapter happen: he used his GI Bill money to go to flight school and is now a U.S. Forest Service pilot. He’s learning how to be the lead plane during fire retardant drops. The lead plane flies through first and shows the tanker where to drop the retardant.
Plus he married the beautiful and nice Jessica.
So he had family, former Marine buddies, and smoke jumper friends all in one place. What a crew. I always love being around fun and energetic people because it leads to fun and energetic pictures.
Fast forward to just after the first look when doing portraits. I hadn’t yet been introduced to Jessica, but saw straight away we would be doing some nice pictures of her and Phil. This portrait happened while she and we were all getting ready to do the portraits. She straightened out her veil and I did a very quick picture.
What do you know, it came out.
Don’t be too surprised, this kind of thing happens a lot. Almost always the best pictures happen between the posed pictures because people show their real side. The key, for me, is to have the camera ready to go at all times. So I stand around like a dork with the camera at my eye and pointed at the people watching and waiting for the moment.
A little while ago while doing a quick edit of the wedding this picture popped out. Looking at it for a second, I thought, “why not see what it looks like in black and white?” Yep, it looks good in black and white.
As I look through the wedding some more, there’ll be more photos to talk about.
