A new blog. Yay!
The first question I thought: what picture to use in the first post? A wedding photo? A portrait? A selfie of some sort?
Nope. I went with a portrait of my kid, Eimear (rhymes with femur), on the Deschutes River in the fall of 2017. I was trying out my brand new Profoto B-2 light with a small soft box. I love the light made with soft boxes, but they take a little while to set up and sometimes don’t do too well outside in the wind. The light, however, amazes me every time.
Having a portable, powerful, and reliable off-camera light is hugely important for how I work. Having this look is a cornerstone of my vision as a photographer. Being able to see the portrait and then make it better than what it looks like in real life, without the need for photoshopping it to death, is a big reason why I love photography. I’ve been using the portable, battery powered Profoto system for about 10 years now for everything from news, to weddings, to portraits, to travel, and birthday parties. Everything.
Every time I see a picture made with the Profoto I gasp with surprise at how good they look.
Using it as practice on my kid on the river gave my wife and I a picture we treasure. She has a framed copy in her office at work. I have one in the room where we meet brides.
